Home Showcase: Historic Dedham Home Fit For A King |

Sometime between 1646 and 1648 King Charles I furnished a land grant for a 1,000-acre parcel to John Farrington in what is now modern-day Dedham. Not a moment too soon, it turns out, as he was executed the following year, in January 1649.

The Farrington family settlement remains, however, at 769 East St., the oldest home on the parcel. And although it’s been partially rebuilt due to a fire and renovated — hey, it’s more than 300 years old — the home retains its antique character and distinctive quirks.

The four-bed, two-bath residence has aged gracefully, with just under 3,500 square feet spread over two levels. Eight wood-burning fireplaces grace the home, but none more special than in the formal dining room — the original kitchen fireplace with a massive hearth and beehive oven. In addition to an updated kitchen with stainless steel appliances, the main living level also includes a family room, stylish living room, and office with beamed ceiling and wainscoting.

Upstairs, the home’s four spacious bedrooms share a bath with radiant heat. In the attic, a sprawling 1,400 square-foot expanse is said to have been the site of a former schoolhouse, and could potentially be finished into a dreamy den. The home’s lower level provides endless storage opportunities, including a wine cellar for you oenophiles.

Charles I couldn’t have fathomed but 2022 families will appreciate the proximity to public transportation and shopping at Dedham Center and Legacy Place.
